Uruguay's Flag
Uruguay’s flag bears the colors white and blue. There are nine stripes on Uruguay’s flag, four are blue and five white, these nine stripes symbolize the government departments of Uruguay. Blue represents the sky and water and loyalty, truth, vigilance, perseverance and justice. The white represents peace and honesty. On the top left-hand corner there is the Sun of May in a white box. The sun has sixteen rays, alternating between wavy and triangular. It also has a smiling human face in the center. The sun reminds people of a large public gathering in Argentina in the year of 1810. It was cloudy and then the sun came out. This was when South America was fighting against Spain for their freedom and the sun emerging from the clouds was taken as a good omen. Uruguay chose to include the Sun of May to show that the country is a “new and vibrant nation”.
