Mount of Ombuses
Located in the department of Rocha lies the Mount of Ombueses. This is a protected area that consists of 200,000 acres of streams, wetlands, lakes and, most importantly, a forest of 500 year Ombuese trees. These enormous trees normally grow solitarily but this is a rare case where they formed a forest. This caused the area to be protected and declared a biosphere reserve. Being a biosphere prevents poaching but the reserve is still open for tourism. This includes fishing from a wide variety of fish such as sea bass, flounder, kingfish, catfish, shrimp, and crabs. Courses are also available to learn about the flora and fauna of the forest as well as the waterways.
