Gay Rights
Uruguay is the second South American country and the twelfth country worldwide to legalize gay marriage. It was legalized on April 2, 2013. It was widely supported, 71 out of 92 voters were for the law.
The first gay couple to be married after the law was passed was Rodrigo Borda and Sergio Miranda. They had been partners for 14 years. "This I san historic day for us and for the country," Borda said. "No longer will there be first and second class citizens. This will be seen in many countries where this option still isn't possible, and hopefully help people in those places live more freely."
